Item Description
2-1/8x3.5x6-7/8" tall tin litho mechanical bank made in Germany by Saalheimer & Strauss, c. 1930-1936. Small text on side notes "By Exclusive Agreement With The Ideal Films Ltd." One of four different (but similar) designs, this bank depicts Mickey Mouse w/one hand by his waistband w/the other pointing upward. Other varieties depict Mickey w/hands clasped in front of him, playing accordion and dancing. Back of all versions is the same, featuring Mickey w/camera and "Smile Please!" text. Additional instruction text at bottom reads "If You Only Pull My Ear - You Will See My Tongue Appear. Place A Coin Upon My Tongue - Save Your Money While You're Young." Mechanical action works thusly - when Mickey's ear (at left) is pulled, his tongue sticks out, coin is placed on tongue and is deposited within bank when ear is let go. Mickey's eyes also move when ear is pulled. All actions work well. Bank has fine scattered hairline crazing, mainly noticeable on white of face, which also has a few minute pinpoint spots of lt. oxidation. Rest of bank has some lt. scattered wear, but bank surface retains a glossy appearance and bank is Fine/VF overall. Rarely offered for sale, these banks have sold at auction for a much as $40,000. All four varieties are extremely rare and highly desirable to both mechanical bank and Disneyana collectors. From the Maurice Sendak Collection and comes with COA.
