Item Description
First is 7/8" with W&H back paper used only in 1901. Front shows a hand holding a cylinder recording with the cylinder reading "Make Music" and the bold surrounding text reading "Edison Records." Upon the palm of the hand is a small facsimile signature of "Thomas A. Edison." The earliest advertising button we know of for a record. Scarce and NM displaying Mint. Second, c.1912, with back paper by Hassan Cigarettes is a cartoon by Bud Fisher of his characters Mutt and Jeff. Jeff is pictured next to a phonograph seated upon "Soap" box with music notes coming from the speaker and a cartoon balloon reading "Every-Body's Doin' It." Mutt points a pistol at his friend with the bold slogan "Take That Noise Out Side." NM displaying Mint. Next is 1.5" with Bastian paper on the back and front displaying the "Columbia Graphophone." c.1910 and NM displaying Mint. Last is a 1.5" with vertical pin on reverse. The item is made of an early form of plastic referred to as gutta percha and it is formed to replicate a record right down to the microscopic grooves which surround the center label with text "Columbia Disc Record/You'll Remember Me." This is one of a small series listing different record titles. Reverse has square paper label giving the New York, Chicago and San Francisco addresses of the "Columbia Phonograph Co." Label is tanned but otherwise the piece is Essentially Mint as issued. Both of these last two pieces are quite scarce. They are also both NM displaying Mint. A group of very historic items relating to early records.
