Item Description
By the 1941 radio season, Ovaltine has taken over sponsorship of the program from Skelly, (see previous item). Apparently Ovaltine liked the sound of the rank "Flight Commander" and they adopted it in 1941 and continued it in 1942 the date of this item. This is a 6.5" tri-fold folder that opens to 9.5". Front has penciled name of recipient who also signed his "Official Commission" on the interior panel. With this rare folder comes the more frequently seen two piece brass badge designating the recipient as a "Capt. Midnight Flight Commander." Reverse has the inscription "Awarded For Distinguished Service." The badge has lost its bright luster and has a few near pinpoint traces of green oxidation, but very minor. Condition remains Fine and the rarity in this group, the folder is Extremely Fine. The second folder in this group is from 1941 with front title "Official Secret Handbook/Flight Commander In The Captain Midnight Secret Squadron." This folder like the previous is 6.5" tall by 9.5" wide but a third of the folder has been cut free and this is the certificate titled "Official Appointment" designating the member as a "Flight Commander." Interior of the folder explains the ring which came to members (see next item). The folder explains how to use the ring and the "Super Code" number on the underside of the top to use for decoding messages broadcast over the program. Original owner inscribed his name in ink on the front cover and signed his commission. Front cover has two small crease lines near the top but overall in clean and Fine condition. A rare pair of folders.
