Item Description
One of the most popular action figure lines of the 1980s was Kenner's "Super Powers" line. Seen by many as the successor to Mego's "World's Greatest Superheroes" line, "Super Powers" was initially proposed as the "DC Present Super Heroes With A 'Super Power Feature'," but the line's name was changed to the more recognizable "Super Powers Collection." For the initial proposal, Kenner crafted mock-up action figures to show to DC Comics licensing representatives. These mock-ups featured prototypes using figures from other figure lines like Mego's "Comic Action Heroes" line, Kenner's "Star Wars" figures and their "Glamour Gals" line. Each figure was designed to include a special "Super Power Feature," which Kenner initially used a punching feature for their Batman figure that was activated by a wheel hidden on the figure's back. DC Comics did not approve of the Mego wheel mechanism on the Batman mock-up, causing Kenner to develop their now famous action features that were activated by manipulating the figure's arms or legs. This required Kenner to create figures at a larger 5" scale to accommodate the hidden feature. Offered here is the 4.25" mock-up prototype Wonder Woman figure that was created using one of Kenner's "Glamour Gals" figures (This lot also includes a carded Loni "Glamour Gal" figure to better illustrate how the Wonder Woman prototype was created. The card is VF and figure is Mint as packaged. Lot also includes issue #24 of "Tomart's Action Figure Digest which includes the photo example prototype offered here as well as the actual photo examples of the following three items #2624-2626). The figure has rooted hair (a feature that was later dropped in favor of molded hard plastic) and has been hand-painted, Wonder Woman's tiara, uniform, bracelets and boots added over the pre-existing "Glamour Gal" figure. Figure has joints at neck, shoulders, waist and hips. The final figure would lose the waist joint and add joints at knees. This prototype does not feature the finished product "Super Power Feature" that caused Wonder Woman to cross her bracelet in front of face when her legs were squeezed. Figure has some lt. aging and legs have become slightly tacky due to aging. Still displays VF. Unique and historic. From the Tomart Archives and comes with COA signed by Tom Tumbusch and Ted Hake.
