Item Description
Large 24x82" heavy artboard sign has been assembled from two pieces, attached at center w/cloth tape on reverse. This is for the 1965 re-release of the 15-chapter serial released in 1943 by Columbia Pictures. The serial starred Lewis Wilson as Batman and Douglas Croft as Robin. J. Carrol Naish played the villain, Dr. Daka. The plot involved Batman as a US government agent attempting to defeat the Japanese agent Dr. Daka, at the height of World War II. Theater employed a local sign-maker to create this one-of-a-kind piece. The sign features a large cut-out from the 1965 re-release one-sheet movie poster that featured a classic 1940s image of Batman and Robin. This was enlarged and has black dot pattern unlike the blue dot pattern used on the 1966 re-release poster. Some of the same text was used as on the one-sheet poster, including "Made in '43...Discovered In '65!" Sign has large "Batman And Robin" text, touting it as "The In-Tertainment Scoop Of The Year." Additional text reads "All 15 Episodes Complete.....250 Minutes Of All-Live Action." Sign has some handling wear/scattered aging. Small scattered traces of wear and staples w/rusting at top and bottom of center fold line. Fine/VF overall. This serial was re-released in 1965 before the Batmania craze inspired by the 1966 TV show started, making this an uncanny coincidence. Impressive and unique.
