Item Description
13.25x16.5”. Large grinning Lincoln is seen holding Douglas and Breckenridge on oyster shells. All three are identified in small text below. Douglas in “Soft Shell” says “I’m A Gone Sucker!!” Lincoln says “These Fellows Have Been Planted So Long In Washington, That They Are As Fat As Butter, I Hardly Know, Which To Swallow First.” Breckenridge being held in “Hard Shell” says “Alas! That Ever I Should Live To Be Swallowed By A Rail Splitter!” Rectangle in upper left corner reads “Political Oyster House/Hard Shells & Soft Shells, Constantly On Hand/Democrats Fried; Stewed, Roasted/ Or On The Half Shell.” Text in this area appears light. Small text at bottom left “Published by Currier & Ives.” Lower right “152 Nassau St. N.Y.” Smallest text at very bottom “Entered According To Act Of Congress In The Year 1860, By Currier & Ives, In The Clerk’s Office Of The District Court For The Southern Dist Of N.Y.” .5x1” moisture mark at bottom center edge. Back has four .25x.5” paper tape edge repairs also .5x2” small area of surface paper off where tape was once attached. .5x1” tape remains. Evenly tanned. A fine example of a classic Currier cartoon frequently shown in books on Lincoln and the 1860 campaign. This original is quite scarce. Julie Powell Collection.
