Item Description
Lot of three handmade pre-Disney Winnie the Pooh dolls, standing between 9.25" and 13" tall. Starting in 1944, Agnes Brush handmade many of the beloved characters from A.A. Milne's books as dolls, each constructed from cotton flannel or muslin, using hand-stitched facial features, painted embellishments, wooden bead eyes and cotton batting for stuffing. A total of nine Pooh characters were made - Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Rabbit, Tigger, Kanga, Roo, Owl and a Heffalump. Offered here are Pooh, Piglet and Owl. Each was handmade, allowing for natural variations in size and materials. Brush stayed true to the look of the original E.H. Shepard renditions of the characters. Pooh came w/a red (or rarer blue) cotton shirt, which was incredibly susceptible to moth holes and is very hard to find doll w/shirt. Shirt is missing on this example, but doll itself is Exc. Piglet is complete w/original pink stitched kerchief around his neck. Small .25" stain on face and larger 1" stain on striped chest. .5" fabric split on one foot. Fine. Owl has some lt. scattered aging and wear, though not too detrimental to painted feather accents. VF. Scarce.
