Item Description
Striking large photo of young black boy staring upwards in defiance at an unseen "accuser" who has called him a Democrat. Boy wears narrow brim hat, multiple layers of rough work clothes and battered somewhat oversized shoes. His resolute expression and clenched fists compliment his response appearing below in a cut-out panel of the matte: "Who's A Democrat?" Beautiful, ornate heavy oak frame is 17x23". Thick textured mat surrounds photo image area of 9x15" (plus caption area of .75x6.75"). Minor tanning of mat, but not spotted. Inner edge of oak frame has raised chain-link design. Original wood boards on reverse and a remnant of backing paper carries notification "Christmas 1901 Dec. 25." Comes with two related themed postcards both with Ohio addresses. One with "1907 by B.F." copyright shows different and bit older black boy again with "Who's A Democrat?" text plus another, also copyrighted "1907 B.F.", shows caricature of Irish workman responding to the opposite "Slander" with text "Who's A Republican?" Cards have minor wear. About Fine. The framed photo is striking, Rare and Extremely Fine. From the Hake Collection. Comes with Hake's COA.
