Auction #184 - Part II
Item numbers 953 through 2651 in auction 184
Item Description
Created by V. T. Hamlin in 1934, Alley Oop has to be the longest-running time traveling Caveman in popular culture. There are other time traveling cavemen, but was more than likely the first. He is definitely the most successful. As popular as the daily and Sunday strips were, Oop has a checkered comic book history. He made his first appearance in 1936 in the back of Dell’s The Funnies and for short spells, he had his own title. This issue is part of what was probably the best run Oop has had in comics. Published by Standard in 1947, it lasted ten issues. The cover features a leering Oop who has his Pirate’s eye on more than the treasure. The pages are off-white. This unrestored book is CGC-certified 9.4 (NM). According to the CGC Census, this is the highest-graded copy they have seen. It is also recognized as being part of the Mile High Pedigree.
