Item Description
Alex Schomburg has created a memorable cover for one of the most under-appreciated newspaper heroes of the Golden Age. What is nice about this cover is that, for Schomburg, it is relatively restrained. While he could pile on the action, especially when he worked for Timely, Schomburg had a great way with just simple and solid action. The character made his debut as a newspaper strip in 1933. His creator, William Ritt, was a real enthusiast for the odder parts of modern science as well as classical mythology. He made extensive use of both elements as well and he also wrote the strip with the flair and pace of the than-modern pulp books. Ritt incorporated time travel before Alley Oop, robots before almost any one and kept readers coming back every day with strong characterizations. Ritt’s co-creator, artist Clarence Gray, had an impressive visual style that matched Ritt’s exciting stories. Bradford had a long history in comics. His first appearance was in the first issue of King Comics (April 1936). He was reprinted in Ace Comics for a short while. His own title only lasted 4 issues, starting with #5 and ending with #8. All the books consisted of reprints. The pages are white. This unrestored book is CGC-certified 9.4 (NM). According to the GCG Census this is the highest-graded copy they have seen. The book is also recognized as part of the Mile High Pedigree.
