Item Description
The "Indian Head" design first issued in 1859 is actually a representation of Liberty wearing an Indian headdress, not an actual Indian. The designer of the coin was James Barton Longacre of the Philadelphia Mint. The first year featured a wreath of laurel(or more properly olive)and was changed the following year to a wreath of laurel and oak tied at the base with a ribbon and a federal shield above. In 1864, the coins composition became bronze(95% copper and 5% tin & zinc)due to the metal shortage caused by the Civil War. This year had two varieties of the number 5 in the date, one with a curved 5 and this one, which is the plain 5 variety. This coin is graded by PCGS as a MS64RB(Red Brown) and has beautiful color and toning. A fabulous addition to any collection of early U.S. coins. From the Robert M. Overstreet Collection and comes with COA.
