Item Description
This is the earliest button we've seen with the word "Hamburger." It is 2.25" with a metal back and horizontal bar pin from the 1930s. Button pictures a design like a heraldic crest featuring a cup of coffee at the top and a hamburger at the lower right and a ribbon design below reading "Aristocratic Hamburger/Trade Mark." We've narrowed the source of this button down to two options. Pasadena is one city that claims to be the birthplace of the cheeseburger. The story is that in 1924 a restaurant owner's son burned a burger while working at dad's restaurant and covered the blemish with cheese. The customer loved it and the burger went on the menu as the "Aristocratic Hamburger" with a price of 15¢. There is an alternative however, the "Aristocratic Hamburger" was Vancouver's premiere 1930s restaurant chain. In either case, this seems to be the granddaddy of all hamburger buttons. Some tiny scattered tan age marks mostly on the upper third. Much silver flashing off the metal back. Rare and Fine.
