Item Description
First is 2-1/8" double-sided celluloid picturing "Queen Alix 2.03¾." Red rim has faded. Reverse celluloid names "Red Oak Fair" with dates in 1899. Top edge of reverse has tiny 1/8" cello split. Still extremely clean and with gloss. Next is 1.25" real photo with oxidized reverse and fixed horizontal bar pin. Front of the piece has his photo with name below "Cresceus." Noticeable staining on the right side and five hairline cello cracks each about .5" but mostly laying quite flat and just catching reflected light. A New York Times article from 1910 considered him "Cresceus Peer Of All Harness Horses" with subtitle "Famous Trotter Had Many World's Records To His Credit When He Quit The Turf." Next is 1.25" real photo celluloid set in a brass frame to overall size of 1.5". Celluloid is covered in crack lines but remains clean. Dog at left has name panel below but not readable. Below the horse is "Star Pointer/Time 1.59 ¼." This famous pacer in 1897 achieved the first sub-two minute mile and that is the time indicated on this celluloid. Last is 7/8" real photo celluloid with concave back and fixed horizontal bar pin. Pictured is "Ira Brand 2:12 ¼." Upper left has three cello cracks with fine crack and light age tone along the bottom edge but majority remains clean and glossy. Very early and very rare harness horse items.
