Item Description
This is a 4" long by 5/8" diameter section of the metal cable laid beneath the Atlantic Ocean to open what was then a revolutionary era of communication. Around each cable end is a 3/8" wide circular brass band. At the center is a larger band inscribed "Atlantic Telegraph Cable/Guaranteed By/Tiffany & Co./Broadway, New York." On August 21, 1858, Cyrus Field sold the balance of the Atlantic Telegraph cable on board the ship U.S.S. Niagara to Tiffany & Co. Jewelers. Tiffany than cut the cable into 4" sections and marketed them to the public in the form of the item offered here. In 1858 crowds lined up to purchase the souvenirs, although Field's effort was not an immediate success as the cable failed after three weeks. Despite the Civil War and personal business setbacks, Field organized a new company in 1865, although that venture also failed. Persevering, Field achieved success in 1866 with the successful laying of cable by the ship Great Eastern. Field received a gold medal from Congress and was acclaimed around the world. Mint as issued. Comes with Hake's COA.
