Item Description
6x9x1.75" cardboard slipcase illustrated w/Norman Rockwell's art from the included 1942 clothbound hardcover that includes both Mark Twain's "The Many Adventures Of Tom Sawyer" and "The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn." Printed by The Heritage Illustrated Bookshelf, this edition is a later printing that contains full color plates featuring the art of Norman Rockwell. Frontispiece has "Becky Thatcher Book Shop" label from "The Home Of Tom Sawyer's Boyhood Sweetheart - Hannibal, Missouri." Frontispiece also bears blue ink inscription from Book Shop manager to Walt Disney that reads "To Walt Disney With All Appreciation From the Becky Thatcher Book Shop, Hannibal, MO, June 1956." Inside front cover also has inscription that reads in part "I Hope This Small Gift May Inspire You To Make These Immortal Stories Into The Most Wonderful And Popular Movies That Have Ever Been Made!" This is the actual copy of the book which was inscribed to Walt Disney by John Winkler (who was also the father of Chris Winkler, the young man who portrayed Tom Sawyer for the June 16, 1956 Disneyland dedication of Tom Sawyer Island, as pictured in the included photo print), former proprietor of the Becky Thatcher Book. Spine of book is aged but book is Exc. overall. Slipcase shows moderate wear and is VG. Comes w/photo print showing Walt Disney personally attending the opening of Disneyland's newest attraction, Tom Sawyer Island, showing Disney actually holding this book. When first presented, the book was still wrapped in brown wrapping paper used by so many small town booksellers. Attending as honored guests of Disney were two Hannibal, MO. youths, Chris Winkler and Perva Lou Smith, modern day Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher. They were the winners of the 1956 Hannibal Chamber of Commerce "Tom and Becky Program." While in attendance, the two youths read a proclamation from the Governor of Missouri that officially annexed the Island to the state of Missouri and then presented Disney w/the inscribed book. At the conclusion of the ceremony, Disney gave this special book to Herb Ryman, who had provided the early concept work for Tom Sawyer Island (now on display at the Walt Disney Family Museum). In Ryman's original 1954 design sketches, the "River Ride" (later to become the Mark Twain Riverboat) was sketched around the island layout that is familiar to us today. The inscribed book was held in Herb Ryman's personal collection until shortly after his passing, when it was obtained through one of his heirs.
