Item Description
1.75" with union bug back stamp from the early 1930s. Trivial surface oxidation on the reverse. Couple of faint hairlines on the front only in reflected light but front is Exc. and displays Mint. Webb was born in Baltimore and afflicted at birth with spinal tuberculosis which left him in poor health for his entire life. A doctor suggested playing the drums as a way to "Loosen Up" his limbs. He acquired a drum set and by age 17 was playing in New York nightclubs such as Black Bottom and the Paddock Club. These early jobs were obtained for him through the efforts of Duke Ellington who instantly recognized Webb's talent. Webb formed a quintet named "Harlem Stoppers" and this evolved into one of the most famous "Swing" bands in New York-The Chick Webb Orchestra. They became the legendary house band at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Ella Fitzgerald became Webb's lead vocalist and he worked with all the greats of the era. His health failed in 1939 and he died in Baltimore on June 16. Only example we have seen and a very historic Jazz related button from the 1930s.
