This “Seated Liberty” design (interchangeably known as the “Liberty Seated” type) for the half dollar was fashioned by noted portraitist Thomas Sully and executed by Mint engraver Christian Gobrecht, a man of great technical skill. For 1854, the rays in the design were deleted from the quarter and half dollar, creating the Arrows type. This design was struck in 1854 at Philadelphia (no mintmark) and New Orleans (O). In 1855, San Francisco (S) augmented the production of the other two mints. Mintmarks can be found on the reverse, beneath the eagle. This example is graded by PCGS as XF45 and has great eye appeal.
