Item Description
10x11.5x1" deep cardboard box w/illustrated lid titled "The Mickey Mouse Box - Five Books Of Adventure Stories With Mickey And His Friends." Whitman set #2146 ©1939 Walt Disney Production. Lid features Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Clarabelle Cow. Set was issued w/books featuring totally different characters, all from Whitman's 1058 series. This is validated by the photo of this boxed set in the 1940 Disney merchandise catalog (also shown on page 181 of the Munsey book). While the box notes "Five Books" there are actually six in this series and all are in this set. Titles include - "Mother Pluto, Timid Elmer, The Brave Little Tailor, The Practical Pig, The Ugly Duckling" and "The Farmyard Symphony." Books were also sold individually and how most copies were purchased, resulting in the rarity of the box. Box has scattered corner tip wear and some minor edge rubs. Lid has 1.25x7.75" area of very faint moisture staining at center, but box remains tight and free of splits. VF overall. Books are each 5x5.5" w/bw story art. All are in superior, NM condition. Very few boxed sets are known and this is the highest grade example of the few we've seen. Lower grade sets have sold for as much as $3,400. From the Rogers M. Fred, Jr. BLB & Related Collection.
