Item Description
On Nov. 22, 1963 our consignor, who created this philatelic document, was working in the New Castle, Pa. post office. He took a plain envelope 5.5 x 7.5” and applied a Mexican 80 CTS stamp that pictures JFK and reads “Visita Del Presidente De Los Estados Unidos De America/ John F. Kennedy/ Correo Aereo Mexico 1962”. Below he placed a pair of U.S. 1950 stamps , each 3 cents, showing the U.S. Capitol and the White House. Below that he placed nine U.S. 8 cent stamps from the “Champion of Liberty” series. The post office applied four cancellation stamps, each 1-3/8” diameter and each reading “New Castle, Pa. 1963” on the outer circle and “NV 22 8:30 PM” across the center. He then used two pieces of cellophane tape about .5” long to affix the envelope (unsealed and unaddressed) to a piece of red paper. Below he used small tape pieces to attach his personal typed statement as well as a clipping from the December 9, 1963 issue of Lynn’s Weekly Stamp News picturing the postmarked envelope. Over the years, the red paper exposed to light in the 9x12” dime store metal frame has faded, the clipping has noticeably tanned, but the typed note and most importantly the envelope show only slight traces of pale tan age tone. The text of the clipping reads: “THE WORLD’S MOST RECENT ‘CHAMPION OF LIBERTY’ is honored by this memorial card which was postmarked on the evening of the day he was assassinated. Prepared by Jim Nelson of New Castle, Pa. this unusual tribute to President Kennedy shows his likeness on the Mexican airmail stamp at the top, then the White House and Capitol stamps at center, upon a base consisting of the nine 8 (cent) Champion of Liberty issues. Nelson’s typed note reads: “The cover was illustrated in Linn’s Weekly Stamp News in the December 9, 1963 issue. It was the first such Kennedy item to be illustrated by the paper. To date, no commercial or individual cover is known to exist which features a J.F. K. stamp and November 22 cancellation.” Fine condition. Unique and Historic. A modest opening as we have no comparable items on which to base an estimated value of this likely first ever philatelic J.F.K. memorial item.
