Item Description
Prototype features same wind-up plane body w/built-in key as 1930s first Marx "Popeye The Pilot" toy, #2134. Tin litho Charlie McCarthy head and hat come from 1938 Marx Charlie McCarthy Benzine Buggy and attached Mortimer Snerd painted tin head was hand-made and painted (as well as Mortimer's hands on plane body) for this unproduced prototype. "McCarthy" name has been hand-painted over "Popeye" name w/smaller "Mortimer Snerd" name painted below on left wing. Right wing has has hand-painted "The Passenger" text added. Underside of wing has painted "2-9-39" date as well as "Erie" and #1818" text. Toy has original "Sample - Louis Marx & Co." string tag w/"E #1400" hand-inked text and "6/3/36". Tag has Glendale, WV. plant name at bottom. Toy has scattered aging and wear w/moderate paint flaking to Mortimer Snerd head. Edges of wings show wear w/.25" dent on left wing. Body of plane has all over aging. Fine overall. Although this toy was ultimately not produced, it did lead to Marx's Charlie McCarthy Private Car toy.
