Item numbers 1063 through 2753 in auction 213
Item Description
Group begins with 1.25" which has back paper by Lopez, Boston. Front text reads "J.W. Gorman's King & Queen/Famous High Diving Horses." Gorman toured with his horses throughout New England and Canada in the early 1900s. Button shows one horse leaping from tall platform towards the waters below plus a small inset at lower left shows both of these white pure-blood horses. Faint gray mark near bottom of scene and three even fainter marks on extreme left rim edge. Full gloss and displays NM. Next is 1.25" with back paper by Steiner, St. Louis. Pictured is giant horse used to promote "Dr. Le Gear's Liniment." Likely the first button to promote this animal medicine product as their slightly later pair of known buttons were both produced in full color. Rare and NM displaying Mint. Next shows the famous horse star of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. 1.75" button carries his name "Beautiful Jim Key" while above he is in the process of using his mouth to select individual letters which he places on a stand and correctly spells out his full name. This was an amazing animal and he has an amazing story. Button has a couple tiny lighter tan dots on lower right rim edge with some additional staining on the reverse and the W&H back paper but the front still displays extremely well with Exc. clear detail and full gloss. For additional celebrity animal buttons see those in our Sports section for race horse Dan Patch #661-663.
