Item Description
6.75x13.25x2.5" deep velvet-covered hinged-lid case w/gold luster metal end caps and engraved presentation plaque on lid that reads "To Paul - From Ames." Case opens to reveal velvet-lined case insert w/areas for revolver and gun-cleaning accessories. This case was one of two produced for use in the 1974 vigilante action film starring Charles Bronson. In the film, this case was presented to Bronson's character Paul Kersey by his client, Ames Jainchill as a thank you for development work Kersey did for him and after noticing Ames' proficiency w/a gun. Ames' gift was a nickel-plated .32 Colt Police Positive revolver. In the film, Kersey's wife and daughter are violently attacked, his wife dies and his daughter is raped, devastating Kersey. When Kersey discovers the gifted gun in his luggage, he loads it, places it into his overcoat, and takes a late night stroll. Motivated by his desire for revenge, he becomes a vigilante, ambushing and killing criminals. Case has some scattered lt. wear and aging to metal w/some tarnishing. Small metal handle on front edge of lid is a bit loose. Fine/VF overall. Comes w/three mock-up magazine covers, each measuring approx. 8.5x11.5" and were produced for the film, each w/vigilante-themed covers. Titles include - "Harper's" w/great photo of traffic light w/noose draped over it and "Frontier Justice In The Streets: A Rising Tide Of Vigilantism" title. Silver off left margin and handling wear. Fine/VF. New York City entertainment "Cue" magazine has "New Hit! Melodrama - Review Of 'Vigilante Violence'" w/image of drawn revolver. Cover was attached to actual magazine cover and includes back. Scattered dust soiling but VF overall. Feb. 3, 1974 cover for "Newsweek" shows hand holding smoking pistol superimposed over dead body (our consignor) and "Vigilantism - Can It Stop Urban Crime?" headline. Cover was attached to actual magazine cover and includes back, but has wear from staple pulls and 1" rough spine split at top. VG/Fine. Lot comes from former production assistant for "Death Wish" producer Dino De Laurentiis. As stated above, there were only two gun cases made by the prop department for the film. One was kept by De Laurentiis's son, who enjoyed photography and took a liking to the consignor's light box he had been using to check the still negatives for the company. At the end of the film, a trade was arranged, the gun case for the photographic light box. Lot comes w/a signed letter from the consignor attesting to this piece's provenance. A great lot featuring a key prop from the film, seen in Bronson's hands.
