Item numbers 1008 through 2793 in auction 214
Item Description
4.75" tall (7.25" tall to top of upright handle) tin litho sand pail features various company markings in Italian along bottom and side opposite seam. 1920s. Pail features two great sequential scenes in bordered design. First scene shows Happy Hooligan riding pig w/Si Slocum and his wife Mirandy from "And Her Name Was Maude" in bkg. while second scene shows pig running under fence, knocking Happy off. Both Happy Hooligan and Maude strips were by Frederick Opper and crossovers occurred. Exterior is evenly aged and has some small scattered nicks/scratches. .5" spot of residue below image of Slocum in second scene and 1/8" spot of bare metal at Happy's eyes. 1x1.75" area of discoloration to right of main image of second scene, but aside from spot of bare metal, issues do not greatly detract from image. Heavy wear to gold luster interior finish. Handle has several minor bends. VG overall. Rare and first we've offered in our 48 years. From the Doug & Pat Wengel Collection and this is the actual example shown in their book "Comic Character Metal Sand Toys."
