Item Description
5/8” with Bastian paper used only 1907-1920 and this button was likely produced upon her death in 1916. After the Civil War battle of First Bull Run, Sally opened a private hospital treating 1,333 Confederate soldiers from the opening until the last patients were discharged June 13, 1865. Her success in healing patients and returning them to the ranks outpaced all other medical facilities and her high rate of success convinced President Jefferson Davis to allow her hospital to remain open even as he shut down other private hospitals in Richmond. To circumvent a regulation calling for all hospitals to be run by the military on September 9, 1861 Davis appointed Tompkins Captain of Calvary, unassigned, making her the only woman to hold a commission in the Confederates states army. She became known as “Captain Sally” and eventually moved into the Richmond Confederate Woman’s Home dying there July 26, 1916. She was honored with a full military funeral. The only example we’ve seen. Trivial pinpoint age dots on reverse by the collet but all else is glossy Mint.
