Item Description
The look-around ring was given by Ralston and made by Robbins in 1946. On the premium version that was distributed each side of the ring has “TM” initials. On this ring, the sides each have three chevrons with a five point star above. The top of this ring is identical to the version used as a premium and features a pair of crossed six guns and two stars. Two sides of this covering ring top have rectangular slots so that when held to the eye and viewed straight on the interior mirror will show objects at a 90° angle. Interior of this ring’s prongs carries the name of the maker “Robbins Co.” and there is no possibility that this is a combination of the ring top as issued and a different ring base with star and chevron designs as the pair of tabs holding everything tightly together has never been tampered with since the day the tabs were bent and sealed. This star and chevron ring base was used as early as 1942 for the Captain Midnight Mystic-Eye detector ring as well as similar rings produced for both the Lone Ranger and Little Orphan Annie. It is likely that when Ralston wanted a premium ring for this 1946 year, Robbins provided this ring as a mock up but in the end Ralston preferred a base with the “TM” initials as opposed to the generic star and chevron design. One of only two examples known to us and both were in our consigners collection since the 1970s. Clean brass finish with much original luster on the top 1/3. Our one other example in Auction #209 exceeded $800.
