Item Description
12.5x18.25x2" deep cardboard box w/illustrated lid (attached w/ribbon so lid can be propped open) contains America Toy Works set No. 531, © Superman Inc. This company made four different Superman paint sets c. 1940 in two different sizes per style in two different art boxes. This is the largest set they produced and includes numerous art supplies that include - six 9x12" bw Superman pictures to paint/color, small color mixing guide, separate wooden artist pallet w/10 small wooden dishes w/paint tablets and illustrated die-cut insert w/22 larger wooden dishes w/paint tablets (three w/some cracks) attached to insert, 10 crayons (paper wrappers are aged/stained and exhibit some melting), two tin litho water dishes, metal tray for paint mixing and paintbrush. Artist pallet paint tablets exhibit cracking but all paints are unused. Superman picture sheets have even but moderate aging and are unused. Sheets also have some margin wear in the form of small tears and some chips (largest being .75x1.75" corner piece off). VG-Fine. Underside of lid has die-cut sheet designed to hold sheets. Color mixing sheet has some surface paper lifts and is Good/VG. Box has moisture staining along left edge of lid and scattered edge wear w/some minor surface paper rippling at right. Box remains tight and insert has inward warp. Box is Fine overall. All American Toy Works Superman paint sets are rare and this is the first example of this set we've offered in our 48 years. Franco Toscanini Collection.
