HISTORIC HORSE RACE THAT ENDED IN TRAGEDY BUTTON.
2-1/8” with title “The Great Match” and showing the filly Ruffian. This was Ruffian’s 11th race, a match race at Belmont Park July 6, 1975 against that year’s Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure. There were 50,000 spectators and a TV audience of 20 million. Ruffian was in front when both sesamoid bones in her right foreleg snapped. She attempted to continue running and the damage necessitated her death. Design a bit off-center as made, otherwise mint.
