Item Description
Group of 13 match safes each with a striker on the bottom or side panel. Sizes are 2” tall to 2.75” tall. Group begins with one from 19th century in hard rubber with advertising for “The Consumers Rubber Co.” in Cleveland. On the front the surface has dulled and faded but easily readable text and no other damage. Second is a figural domino safe made of celluloid. Top edge pushes up to open. Side edge is just a little loose near the top but still very intact. Top edge of the domino has an impressed hairline and domino surface shows some general paint wear on the black spots. Overall still VG and very likely from the 19th century. Next is silvered brass with aluminum panels promoting “The Tabor Vibrator/The Business End Of The Molding Machine.” This was a giveaway from the company with reverse text “Every Founderyman Likes A Good Match.” Next is double sided celluloid tinted real photo with one side showing “Upper And Lower Bridge Over Cuyahoga River Near Akron, Ohio” with opposite side “Little Reservoir Near Akron, Ohio.” Exc. Next is hinged safe with popup lid showing Indian and Liberty figure plus Lion logo of the “International Tailoring Co.” Silvering off the underside but rest displays NM. Next in same format of flip up lid shows Indian and Liberty figure next to a brass depiction of the “Official Flag St. Louis 1904” world’s fair. Small wear mostly on the underside. The following seven safes are all wrapped in celluloid. Most of these have significant wear on one or both sides but for the most part illustrations and text remain complete. First is a rarity, but worn, for “Frog In Your Throat” cough and cold remedy. Next is for a dealer in grain and coal. Next is for “Molassine” horse and cattle food. Next is for “Buckeye Binder And Mower.” Another rare safe with great color scenes although showing some color loss from both sides and small bit of silver flashing off the end caps. Next is for road machinery company the “Austin-Western.” Slight color loss of the female nude angels on the reverse. Next is for a tailor in Macon, Georgia. Both sides show wear but largely complete. Last is for “Hunter Baltimore Rye” with the side showing the jumping horse in VF condition but with the side showing the liquor bottle having many pinpoint black dots on the celluloid surface. Many rarities and a quite modest opening bid for 13 safes.
