Item Description
The Detect-O-Scope is a scarce 1941 Ovaltine premium, particularly so with the instruction folder. This example has “Premium Library” on the box and came out of the General Mills archive auction in the 1980s. The item is a .75” diameter by 5” long red cardboard tube with metal device on one end which has a knob to swivel a reflective metal plate. The item carries a separate metal piece inside the tube which can be pulled out revealing a series of four holes each with an altitude designation so that when viewing an airplane through one of these holes its altitude can be estimated. The instructions are 2.25x3-9/16” folder which opens into four panels printed both front and back. Folder instructs on how to use the “Five-Way Detect-O-Scope” and these are: 1-as a distance finder; 2-as a rear-sight periscope; 3-as a wide-view panorama scope; 4-as a cloud-sweeping sky-scanner; 5-as a signal-flashing heliograph. Brochure also includes a coupon for ordering an additional example. Brochure has small creases but clean. The premium itself and box are NM. Also included is the “Captain Midnights Spy-Scope” a metal tube 3.5” long that extends to 6.5”. The orange plastic lense caps are not cracked. From Ovaltine 1947. A Sunday newspaper comic section advertisement mounted on cardboard comes along (10x15”).
