Item Description
Heavy silvered brass badge 1.75” tall. Vertical pin on the back along with stamped name of maker “Hiss Co./Columbus, O.” Front of the piece reads “Inspector/Radio/16/Columbus/Radio League.” Much of the black accent color within the letters and numbers is now gone but the piece still retains its Exc. silver luster. This group was founded by Hugo Gernsbach in 1915 and Nikola Tesla and Dr. Lee DeForest were among four honorary members. In 1915 there were some 300,000 radio amateurs in America but most simply had receivers and not transmitters. Gernsbach, famous as a science fiction writer and publisher of the pulp magazines Amazing Stories and Wonder Stories tried to promote radio through this group and publication of a magazine called The Electrical Experimenter. This Radio League group faded away around the time Gernsbach ceased publishing that title. This is the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the group. Rare and the only example we’ve seen. A very historic badge in the development of radio use in America.
