Item Description
14x22" silkscreen on cardboard poster. 1940's. Features striking silhouette image of town with church, bar, hardware store and factory. In the foreground two cars navigate the street while in the distant sky seven fighter jets are in formation. Poster reads "Dim Out House, Shop & Car Lights" and "When In Doubt-Turn It Out". The word "Lights" is rendered to look as though it is made of light bulbs. Text at bottom reads "Obey Regulations Nassau County War Council". In lower margin "N.V.S. W.P.A.". In an effort to help unemployed artists find work the WPA employed over 5000 around the country to produce many thousands of posters. Despite these massive numbers few have survived. Cardboard has light brown toning noticeable only in margins. A few trivial nicks on edges not detracting from image. Each corner has loss most significantly at top left and right each missing an area less than 1" and not affecting any text. VG. Despite these flaws a rare and outstanding graphic homefront poster with rich deep colors that remain fresh and bold. Not documented in Library Of Congress collection. First we've seen.
