Item Description
This premium was briefly issued in late 1939/early 1940 in "Action Comics" and "Superman" comic books and was obtained by recruiting three friends to join the Supermen of America Club. Large 5.5" dia. emblem/patch is one of the very earliest Superman premiums and was originally advertised as a "Superman Emblem." Unlike other similar patches which are just felt, this is made of two thin layers of felt and sandwiched between these layers is a thin sheet of cardboard which gives the patch a high degree of stiffness although it flexes under pressure. Front has choice silk-screened design featuring classic image of Superman breaking chains surrounded by "Supermen Of America - Action Comics" text. Emblem/patch is evenly aged but has no creases. Silk-screened design remains bold and strong and shows virtually no wear. VF. In light of recent extraordinary sales of "Action Comics" #1, it is important to note that there are far fewer of this patch known (only about 7 or 8) as opposed to existing copies of "Action Comics" #1. One of the rarest and most desirable Superman premiums. As rare as the emblem/patch is, the accompanying mailing envelope and printed letter are more rare. Envelope bears "Supermen Of America" return address and has large handwritten recipient's name in ink. Stamp remnant at upper right. Envelope shows lt. wear from mailing and is evenly aged. Fine. Comes w/5.5x8.5" printed letter w/repeated image of Superman breaking chains and "Supermen Of America" address at top. Letter mentions enclosed emblem and goes on to promote "Action Comics." Letter has area of age tanning from where emblem rested against letter over the years as well as small .5x5/8" spot of aging at image area. Fine overall. Franco Toscanini Collection.
