Item Description
4.75x6" card with 3/4x1-1/2" piece of wood from Washington's original coffin. Top section of card reads "A Very Rare Relique- A Portion Of The First Coffin That Gen. G. Washington Was Entombed In. This Piece Was Presented To Wm. Shuster By Washington's Old Colored Servant And By Shuster To John P. Stryker And By Stryker To Wm. R. Thomas And By Thomas To Wm. Klingbeil". Next to the piece of wood is written "Dec. 14, 1799". Lower portion reads "When Washington Was Taken Up And Reintombed At Mount Vernon The Old Coffin Became The Property Of His Old Black Servant (From Newspaper Of That Date)". The servant in question may be Washington's personal valet William 'Billy' Lee the only one of Washington's slaves to be freed upon his death. Reverse of card reads "July 19th 1853- John, This Is Small Enough. Don't Part With Any Of It For Love Or Money. I Have No More, This Is All There Is In Our Family. Wm Klingbeil To John Klingbeil". Some minor warping of the card and three small stains at the extreme left of the wood piece not affecting text. Fine. Despite the small size of the actual artifact the presence of the written history makes this example much more interesting and displayable than other larger pieces of the coffin we have encountered.
