Item Description
The first portion of this lot consists of a box lid and award medal given when the Great White Fleet visited Yokohama, Japan Oct. 18-25, 1908. The first part of the lot is a 2” long wooden box lid missing one side skirt and with Japanese inscription on the exterior lid. The interior has paper label reading “Presented By The Navy Of Japan. October, 1908. Made By Miyamoto-Shoko Ginza, Tokyo.” The other portion of the box which is here is a thin sheet of fabric covered wood which was apparently an insert in the bottom of the box not present. The medal itself consists of a 7/8” wide pin on a loop suspending the medal done in enamel colors on what is unmarked but probably silver. Displayed are American and Japanese flags against an anchor design with the date of “1908” at the bottom. The reverse of the piece is very similar to the front although without the enamel coloration. The medal is Mint. Second item comes from a few years later. It is 2-5/8” tall in silvered brass with a pin hanger at top featuring flags of both countries. Below is an anchor design with center circle showing two ships against mountains. Reverse text reads “Presented By The Japanese Assn’ Of North America/Commemorative Of The Visit Of H.I.J.M. Ships Azuma & Asama/June 27 To July 6, 1914, Seattle, U.S.A.” NM. Two rare items with very limited distribution.
