Item Description
4.25x6.5" cabinet card features crisp and sharp photo print w/image of the purportedly all womens "Young Ladies' Base Ball Club No. 1" for the season of 1890-1891. The team was managed by W.S. Franklin, whose name is printed at left. Along w/Franklin's name are the players' names (and positions) below photo - Effie Earl (S.S.), Edith Mayves (3B), Alice Lee (L.F.), Rose Mitchell (R.F.), Angie Parker (2B), May Howard (Cap and P.), Annie Grant C.F.), Kittie Grant (1B) and Nellie Williams (C). Team is dressed in striped skirts and matching hats w/large bows at necks. While the team played as an all-female club, it is rumored that perhaps two or three of the players were actually men dressed as women. Card has four small insect holes, three at top margin (two affecting photo, but not player images) and fourth at bottom right. Most of Angie Parker's name is missing due to surface paper wear. Photo has two small spots of surface lift. Fine overall. Historic baseball item, among the earliest pieces to showcase female players, decades before the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League debuted.
