Item Description
13.5x20-3/8" thin artboard has pen and ink original art by legendary comic book artist Jack "King" Kirby for page 28 of the Aug., 1964 issue of "Journey Into Mystery" published by Marvel Comics. While "Journey Into Mystery" served as the springboard for Thor before he received his own title, this art is for page three of "Tales From Asgard: Balder Must Die" backup story featuring Thor's half-brother and frequent antagonist Loki. Page features four large panels, showing Loki consulting the Norn Queen Karnilla as to weaknesses the Asgardian warrior (and Thor's friend) Balder might have. To Loki's delight, she reveals he has a weakness to mistletoe. Loki then runs off into the wilderness in search of mistletoe, finding a small clump, which he holds up triumphantly in third panel (which features great full body image). Last panel shows Loki holding dart fashioned out of mistletoe as he waits for one of his slave trolls to fashion a blowgun out of mistletoe, stressing that the dart must be able to pierce Balder's armor. Loki is featured in every panel. Art by Kirby w/inks by Vince Colletta. Handwritten title w/issue/page number in grease pencil at top. Additionally, top margin features penciled text explaining what is happening in each panel. Left/right margins also have penciled text by bottom panels, but text runs off the page, indicating possible slight trim. This in no way affects art, which remains clean and Exc. As good as an early Loki page gets, and we are thrilled to offer this stunning piece of original art by a true comic book legend to the collecting community.
