Item Description
Original early generic illustrated cardboard box contains 15-piece (w/two pieces having figural lids) china set consisting of 4-7/8" tall figural teapot (w/Mickey Mouse head lid), 4" tall figural sugar container (w/Mickey head lid), 3.5" tall figural creamer, four 5" dia. plates, four 4.25" dia. saucers and four 1.5" tall by 3" dia. teacups and original woven straw mat for under teapot (first we've seen). Underside of sugar marked "Made In Japan," but others are o/w unmarked. 1930s. Box is scarce early style, w/"The Little Hostess Set" lid label and deeper than most and w/o slots; pieces just stacked in box w/straw packing. Box shows obvious and heavy wear and is just Good. This is the first example of this early deep box we've seen. Each piece features full body Mickey image. Plates all feature same image of two Mickeys, one w/boxing gloves. Saucers all feature same image of Mickey w/o boxing gloves from plates while teacups have same image of Mickey w/boxing gloves and additional small waving Mickey image. Mickey head for teapot has neat glue repair to broken lower portion of face. VG/Fine. Pieces have some lt. scattered wear, but o/w set is VF-Exc. Great design and very attractive w/iridescent glaze. Doug & Pat Wengel Collection.
