Item Description
22.5" wide by 33.5" long by 49" tall solid carved and painted wood carousel figure of Mickey Mouse. Unmarked but made in Angers France by Henri De Vos Company as a known example of this figure has De Vos, Angers name plate on leg. 1930s. De Vos was known to use Disney characters on the carousels his company produced. Figure is all hand-carved wood (assembled from a number of pieces) w/exception of cast iron legs mounted to 15.75x39.5" wooden board base. Figure was then whimsically painted. As carousel figures are often repainted over the years, this figure does not exhibit its original paint, though current paint is in original paint scheme and nicely done. When figure was in use, it originally had large metal eye bolts screwed into Mickey's cheeks to which reins were attached to. These reins led to rickshaw/cart that children sat in. These eye bolts have since been removed and holes have been filled in. This is not noticeable and is mentioned for complete accuracy. Mickey's depiction here is not as traditionally seen, his appearance being more stylized in design, w/scalloped ear edges and large lolling tongue hanging out of his open mouth.
Tip of tail is broken off, but figure is o/w free of cracks and exhibits some scattered paint wear (most noticeable at edges of ears and on arms). VF overall. Considered by many collectors to be the ultimate Mickey Mouse figural piece, these figures are extremely rare, w/less than five known examples remaining. Certain to become the centerpiece of any Disney collection. Due to size and/or weight of this lot, shipping charges may be substantial.
