Item Description
This and the following item are two of the three Custer portrait buttons we know of and we've only ever seen one of each. This piece is from the Hake collection. 1.75" with large photo beneath text "Guest Of Custer Camp No. 10." Back pin suspends 3.5" ribbon with gold text "24th Encampment S. Of V. Lewiston, Me. June 20-21, 1906." Ribbon is a little dark with dust and has a center fold line. There is a stain on the upper 1" of fabric but the stain mark shows only on the reverse. Also mounted on the reverse is a 1.5" square paper label lightly stained all over, with promotional text for the maker W&H Co. The button also has a W&H paper. Ribbon is VG. Button has light surface wear under magnification but displays glossy and Mint. The inscription "S. of V." refers to Civil War group known as Sons of Veterans. Only one known.
