Item Description
Lot contains near complete (missing only two pages, pages 9 and 15) pen and ink original art for Comico's "Jonny Quest" #10, published March, 1987. This includes front and back covers (back being fully illustrated) and 26 thin artboards measuring between 11.5x16-1/8" and 11.5x18-1/8". This is for "Winters Of Discontent" storyline written by William Messner-Loeb w/art by Marc Hempel and inks by Mark Wheatley. Story opens w/Jonny and Hadji attending a performance of Shakespeare's "Richard III." Attending the performance w/them is Jonny's father Dr. Quest, Race Bannon, Marley and Jonny's dog Bandit. They meet actor playing Richard III and visit his ancestral home where he demonstrates one of his many inventions, a time viewing platform. It of course malfunctions, sending Jonny, Hadji and Bandit back to 1485, where they meet the historical Richard III, Jonny saving his life from an attempted assassin. He also meets the Princes in the Tower (before the were imprisoned in the Tower of London), engaging them in mock swordplay. Richard reads Jonny's copy of Shakespeare's play and it has a devastating affect on him to see himself portrayed as such a monster. Hadji arrives to warn of impending invasion by Henry Tudor, prompting Richard to don his armor and rally forces for fight as Bosworth Field, where the historical Richard was killed in battle. Hadji thwarts an attempted kidnapping of the princes before he and Jonny find themselves transported back home to their correct time, where the actor portraying Richard saves Jonny from being hit by car. They later find a letter from the historical Richard III granting land and riches to Richard actor's destitute family. Front cover features story title paste-over and has original onionskin paper overlay (which shows obvious wear). Cover art and pages have a few scattered paste-overs featuring altered original art; these have aged due to adhesive on backs. Artboards have some scattered edge/corner tip wear but are VF/Exc. overall w/clean and Exc, art. Art comes w/7.5x10.75" artboard w/watercolor original art by Mark Wheatley and attached linework acetate overlays for pages offered above (w/the addition of page 15). Inked title and page numbers at margins of most. Artboards have curled due to watercolors but remain clean and Exc. overall. Comes w/actual reading copy of the comic book this art was produced for.
