Item Description
9x13" black cardboard folder with silver text and graphics. Front titles "The Messenger." Printed for the Thos. D. Murphy Co. Red Oak Iowa. This example is marked "Folder A." Inside folder on left side are two 3.75x8.75" calendar samples with text at top reading "The Detectogram Messenger." Colorful 3.5x5" art illustrations are on both calendar samples. One features a New Year's theme by Dr. Seuss. Other sample shows bathing suit-clad female skier lying on snow with legs in the air due to the skis she is wearing with caption "Slipping Beauty." Sample calendars are dated 1937. Underneath each piece of artwork is copyright, series numbers and title of series. Seuss series is titled "It's A Great World." Pin-up art by Enoch Bolles is titled "As You Like 'Em." Included in packet beneath sample calendar are the 11 remaining artwork samples that complete each series. Different art for each month of the calendar year. Each sample by Dr. Seuss has funny caption below illustration. Each pin-up art illustration has clever one or two word inuendo. Right side of folder has lengthly text pages explaining the idea behind the Detectogram story series. Other promotions are discussed in great detail. All being offered by "The Thomas D. Murphy Co." Light cover wear to outside covers at corners where folder may have been attached to larger item, ie. scrapbook, display board, etc. Does not detract from the quality, clarity, detail of the enclosed art.
