Item Description
This large and elaborate leather badge is 3 1/8” diameter with a string hanger at top. It is comprised of two circles of embossed leather glued to a cardboard center insert. The piece is listed as Sullivan GC 1888-1. The obverse inscription is “In Commemoration of The Democracy 1885-1889” with a star accent to the right and left all surrounding the head of a donkey wearing a laurel wreath accented by flowing ribbons. Lower edge has very tiny lettering partially worn but largely readable as “Robert Snider New York.” The reverse of the piece has the inscription above “A Public Office is a Public Trust” while below a casket is inscribed “R+I+P” with an owl perched on top and text “I Told You So.” Above the owl is a large horseshoe enclosing a bandanna flanked to the left by an urn inscribed “Free-Trade” and flanked to the right by an urn inscribed with the numeral “4”, all enclosed by a circle of 42 stars. Extremely tiny and minor wear to the outer leather edge but hardly noticeable and overall condition is Exc. Leather remains supple and exceptionally clean so that all text and detail is easily seen, but difficult to capture photographically. First we’ve been able to offer. Rare.
