Item Description
1.75" with original attachments below. Red and white ribbons are each missing a few vertical fabric strands off their left and right sides but all are largely intact and quite clean. Other attachments are celluloid baseball charm and dark green celluloid miniature bat. In 1939 the Yankees held a Lou Gherig appreciation day during which Gherig made his "Luckiest Man" speech. This button could be from that day but given the black rim edge on this piece it's probably more likely this is a memorial issue likely sold at the stadium shortly after his death on June 2, 1941. Surface has small raised bump on his cheek which is as made and caused by the stamping of the union bug on the reverse. The button displays essentially Mint and the ribbons are clean if a little worn. One of about 3 examples we've seen over 38 years and the only example to have the original attachments. This item is assigned a value of $1,750.00 in the Baseball Pinbacks Buttons book by Paul Muchinsky.
