Item Description
In 1927, in preparation for an expected rising tide of revolution, unsuccessful attempts were made by Communists to take cities such as Nanchang, Changsha, Shantou, Guangzhou (Canton), and an armed rural insurrection known as the Autumn Harvest Uprising was staged by peasants in Hunan Province. The Autumn Harvest insurrection was led by Mao Zedong (1893-1976), who would later become chairman of the CCP and head of the state of the People's Republic of China. In Canton, at 3:30 AM on December 11, 1927, Communist militia and worker Red Guards launched an uprising taking over most of the city by 6:00 AM, and the Communist leadership announced the formation of a Canton Soviet. On the next day the Soviet became "Official" when it was ratified at a mass meeting. However, by then the uprising was already being driven back by warlord forces. Zhang Tailei, the organizer behind the uprising, was assassinated as he returned from a meeting. By 4:00 AM on December 13th Canton was recaptured by warlord armies and their allies. In the following purges many young Communists lost their lives and the Canton Soviet became known as the "Canton Commune" or "Paris Commune Of The East." Despite being the third failed uprising in 1927, it encouraged further uprisings across China. This black on deep red 7/8" USA made button has center wreath surrounding a star flanked by dates "1927-1934." Text in both Chinese and English on the rim reads "7th Anniversary Canton Commune." Red/black contrast is clear in our photo but black text is difficult to read in person unless closely viewed. Couple pinpoint cello splits by reverse collet are barely showing. No backpaper likely as issued. Button was most likely produced by the Communist Party USA as a commemorative. Overall Exc. Rare and first we've seen.
