Item Description
This design is known as a 2x3" campaign card back-stamped "Published By The New York Photographic Co. No. 453 Broadway New York." However, this is the first example we've seen as an approximate 17x22" print, as found under glass in its original 20x25" frame in a central New York State attic. Bottom edge reads "Lith. & Pub. By Lewis & Goodwin, 452 Broadway Albany, N.Y." Frame has numerous color rubs and .5x1.75" chip off left. Each man's facsimile signature is beneath his image and captioned above: "Liberty" for Washington, "States Rights" for Jefferson, "The Constitution" for Jackson, "The Union" for McClellan and "The Laws" for Seymour, who was a leading Lincoln opponent but lost the 1864 Democratic nomination to McClellan. He became the Democratic candidate in 1868. A few light scattered tan dots, 2x7" stain area at bottom left and narrow tan streak 6" up from bottom caused by narrow open gap where the wooden cover on reverse split. Wood back held in place by original headless nails. Ornate designs include eagle, flags, Declaration of Independence, swords, rifles, cannon, constitution and seated female figure of Justice at center holding sword and scales. Displays nicely with moderate age. Rare.
