Item Description
1.25" real photo sepia c. 1904 shows horse holding a bell in his mouth along with photo of composer with text promoting "Jim Key Two-Step By Minoliti."  Jim Key was trained by "Dr." William Key, born a slave and a self-trained veterinarian known for horse whispering and animal healing skills.  William Key became one of the most recognized African-Americans of his time.  He taught Jim Key to read, spell, recognize money and do basic arithmetic.  Jim performed nationwide and was the top money maker at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.  Animal rights advocates of the S.P.C.A. used Jim Key to promote the humane treatment of animals.  Jim Key was retired in 1906 and died in 1912.  Only example we've seen.  Covered tin back by Shaw, Phila.
