Item Description
19.75x20" wooden frame contains original fabric double-mat w/9x9.75" image area composed of two hand-inked and painted cels depicting Charles Laughton as Captain Bligh, Spencer Tracy as Manuel Fidello and Freddie Bartholomew as Little Lord Fauntleroy in tub at sea. This is for the Rub-A-Dub-Dub sequence of the 1938 animated short film produced by Walt Disney Productions and distributed by RKO Radio Pictures. The film parodies several Mother Goose nursery rhymes using caricatures of popular Hollywood film stars of the 1930s and was nominated for an Academy Award. Sold by Courvoisier Galleries w/hand-painted Courvoisier bkg. and ocean foreground, c. 1938. Slight ripple to cels, w/some hairlines to Laughton's pants and some small flakes at his knees. Other two characters have a few minor hairlines and tub itself has some small flakes that have lifted off rim, but remain in place for display. Fine overall and still nice for display as professionally double-matted and framed. Stunning piece of animation. Cels from this short are incredibly difficult to locate as only a select number were offered for sale by Courvoisier and as such all are in high demand. Rare.
