Item Description
2.5x2.5x.75" deep tin litho w/classic image of Superman breaking chains and three sides featuring "Superman" comic book title logo. Reverse has black metal w/sliding trap door. c. 1940 © DC. Superman is depicted w/fleshtone hands and face, a variety was also produced w/these areas in white. Moderate rim wear w/traces of black metal showing and some small scattered scratches. Front has .5" scratch and back has minor dent. Fine. Comes w/3.5" tall tin litho stacking coin bank w/designated slots for coins at top. Graphics are generic in nature w/sides featuring die-cut openings where coins can be viewed along w/savings amounts. Metal used in bkg. is clearly repurposed metal from the "Superman" dime bank included in this lot. This was a measure often used by toy companies to cut production costs. This is the first example of this Superman variety we've seen. Marked "Made In USA," 1950s. Underside has movable base for removal of coins, bank is missing key which locks this into place. Scattered rim wear, but o/w bright, glossy and Fine. A unique piece for the Superman completist. Franco Toscanini Collection.
