Item Description
4-5/16x6-1/2" cabinet card with applied photo. Issuer is named as "Robinson And Roe/77 & 79 Clark St./Chicago And New York. The Haymarket massacre was the aftermath of a bombing during a labor demonstration in Chicago's Haymarket Square May 4, 1886. During a demonstration by workers striking in support of an eight hour day and in retaliation for laborers killed by police the day before an unknown person threw dynamite at police setting off a flurry of gunfire that resulted in the deaths of seven police officers and four civilians. Of the eight anarchists convicted of conspiracy seven were sentenced to death. Two of the sentences were commuted to life in prison, one committed suicide in jail and the remaining four were hung Nov. 11, 1887. The Haymarket affair is often cited as the inspiration for international May Day observances. The eight men shown are August Spies at center and clock wise from upper right: Samuel Fielden, Oscar Neebe, George Engle, Adolph Fischer, Louis Lingg, Michael Schwab and A. R. Parsons. A pencil caption on card back reads: "Instigators Of The Haymarket Massacre Socialist Labor Activists- Sentenced, Imprisoned And Hung". A third of the back is very tanned, but otherwise only small traces of wear. VF and Rare.
