Item Description
First item is 3-1/8" tall colorful portrait mirror with text "Souvenir Of Pittsburgh, Pa." Small dark stain traces on the four corners and a couple along the left edge but well over 90% remains clean. Next are three items each with photo of him saluting and his quotation "I Shall Return." Two of these pieces are identical in front design but the first with NM color is a formed sheet of celluloid with a reverse edge creating a channel which holds a spring pin. The second item has a couple of thin color spots on the front and the reverse of this has the edge holding a glass pocket mirror. We do not think the button version is simply a mirror missing the glass, as the reverse material is a little wider on the button version and it has a rippled edge compared to a narrower edge, which is smooth on the mirror. In addition, there is a complete book of matches with the same designs. Match cover has a little dust soil and stain by the staple. We had one of these pocket mirrors in auction #210 which came from the son of a man who worked as a stenographer in MacArthur's office in the Philippines from October 1944-June 1945. He taped one of these mirrors into his scrapbook with the notation "Mirrors Dropped By Planes In Philippines Prior To Re-Occupation By Allied Forces." We think it is most likely all three of these items were distributed in that manner. Scarce items.
